Fortum follows closely the nuclear power plant accident in Japan

Last Friday, 11 March 2011, Japan suffered the worst earthquake in the country's history. A tsunami following the earthquake caused a serious accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. Efforts to gain control of the situation continue, but public information on the situation is partly unclear and insufficient.

Fortum follows the development in Japan closely. The accident and its progress is carefully analysed as credible information is available.

Severe accident management has been developed extensively in Fortum's Loviisa power plant and at Fortum's partly-owned nuclear power plants during the past decades. Also a large part of Fortum's R&D work focuses on nuclear safety. Based on this work, development of safety and accident preparedness is consistently improved at the power plant.
