Kesko and Skanska Etelä-Suomi Oy have signed an agreement to build a Citymarket hypermarket at Nummela, in the Laustionpelto area. The site owned by Skanska is about three hectares in area. The construction of Citymarket will increase the attraction of the Nummela area as a provider of retail services.
A building plan ratified in June 2000 allows the construction of a business building of 9,000 sq m on this site. Kesko will immediately start negotiations with the municipality of Vihti and Skanska Etelä-Suomi Oy about the placing and building of this Citymarket store on the site.
According to the preliminary plans, there will be parking places for 500 cars in the yard area. The total costs of the project are estimated to be about FIM 95 million. The aim is to open the new Citymarket during the year of 2002.
The new Citymarket will be located in a place with good traffic connections, which is a guarantee of good accessibility. In addition to the people living at Nummela, the Citymarket hypermarket will provide services to consumers of the neighbouring areas.
The Citymarket chain includes a total of 40 stores. The chain’s sales target for 2000 is about FIM 7.5 billion. The Citymarket chain’s share of the Finnish grocery market is about 10%, and the Citymarkets account for 27% of the Finnish department store trade.
