Fortum's Loviisa nuclear power plant to modernize turbines and increase output by 24 MW
Press Release 2 November 2012
The high-pressure turbines at Fortum's Loviisa nuclear power plant will be modernized during 2014-2017. The investment will increase the nominal output of Loviisa Power Plant by approximately 24 MW. The modernization contract has been signed with Skoda Power, and the work will be carried out during normal planned annual maintenance outages. The modernization is a part of the continuous improvement program of Loviisa power plant aimed to secure safe and economic energy production until the end of the plant's licensed lifetime.
The project includes modernization of the casings, inner parts and quick-closing valves of the four high-pressure turbines at the plant. It will significantly increase the power output of the turbine generator, without increasing its thermal power. As the scope of the modernization is the turbines only, it has no effect on the reactors or nuclear safety.
The total output of the Loviisa units is 992 MW at present.
In 2011, Fortum's Loviisa nuclear power plant produced 8.06 terawatt hours of electricity, corresponding to about 10 percent of the total
annual power consumption in Finland. Loviisa power plant has one of the best safety and availability records among the world's nuclear power plants. The load factor describing annual production is high in international comparison, e.g. 94.3 percent last year.
