    STRABAG modernises Polish railway

  • Expansion of metropolitan railway in Cracow
  • Renewal of 20 km section between Cracow and Rudzice
  • Contract value for STRABAG of approximately € 180 million

  • Cracow, 19 April 2017---The construction group STRABAG, acting as consortium leader, will modernise the 20 km long section of rail between Cracow and Rudzice and expand the suburban railway in Cracow. The PLN 958 million rail construction project, the largest of its kind in Poland, is scheduled for completion in April 2021. The project is being carried out in consortium with Krakowskie Zakłady Automatyki S.A. STRABAG’s share of the contract amounts to 80 % or about € 180 million net.

“We will not only build, but also design, this infrastructure project. In this way, we can fully bring our expertise into this EU Connecting Europe Facility-funded project. We are well prepared – after all, we have been realising important infrastructure projects in Poland for 30 years. This is the fifth project in this year alone that we have signed as part of the country’s rail modernisation programme,” says Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE.

New track and bridges over the river Vistula
One part of the contract foresees the construction of a new metropolitan rail line to serve Cracow’s suburbs. This will require new track and stations to be built and existing ones to be modernised. A total of 55 bridges are to be erected, including two rail bridges over the river Vistula with a length of 234 m and 227 m.

The contract also includes the renewal of the 20 km long rail lines 133 and 91 between Cracow’s main freight station Kraków Główny Towarowy and Rudzice. Among others, the overhead lines, switches and signalling control systems will be exchanged. The project will shorten travel times and so contribute to improving passenger comfort.
