Züblin and HOCHTIEF commissioned to build the Cherbourger Strasse harbour tunnel in Bremerhaven

    11.09.2014 | Ed. Züblin AG
    • The contract value for the road tunnel is € 122 million (net)
Stuttgart/Essen, 11 September 2014___BIS Bremerhavener Gesellschaft für Investitionsförderung und Stadt-entwicklung mbH has commissioned a joint venture (JV), consisting of Ed. Züblin AG (technical leader/JV share 37 %), HOCHTIEF Solutions AG (commercial leader/JV share 33 %) and Züblin Spezialtiefbau GmbH (JV share 30 %), to build the Cherbourger Straße harbour tunnel in Bremerhaven.

The tunnel is to run from East to West and will be located south of Cherbourger Straße. It will serve as an efficient road link, connecting the international port and business parks located close to the port with the highway A27. The order volume of around € 122 million (net) includes the construction of the two-lane road tunnel, using an open cut construction method, and shall also include all entrance and exit ramps, two operation buildings and ten escape staircases. The JV will also be responsible for most of the construction planning. The structure will be 1,195 m long and will consist of a tunnel tube with two-way traffic, and at the eastern end it will divide into two separate tubes where the respective traffic flows are in one direction. The total length will be 1,848 m (North side) and 1,659 m (South side).

The construction planning is already in full progress, and the building of the complex membrane wall construction pit with underwater concrete floor will already commence this year. The tunnel is scheduled to be completely built by the end of June 2018, and it will considerably reduce the traffic volume around Cherbourger Straße.

Stuttgart-based Ed. Züblin AG has about 14,000 employees and, with an annual output of about € 3 billion, is one of Germany’s leading construction companies. Since it was founded in 1898, Züblin has been successfully realising challenging construction projects in Germany and abroad and is the number one in the German building construction and civil engineering segment. The company’s range of services comprises all construction-related tasks – from civil engineering, bridge building and tunnelling to complex turnkey construction to structural timber engineering and public-private partnerships. The company’s current construction projects include the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, Milaneo in Stuttgart and the second section of the Jena University Hospital.
