STRABAG successfully hands over drinking water treatment plant in Ghana

    • Construction of treatment plant and supply network in Western Africa
    • Contract value of around € 9 million
Accra/Vienna, 6 August 2014----STRABAG Water Technologies, a unit of Austrian listed company STRABAG SE, has successfully handed over an Austrian financed development project comprising the construction of a drinking water treatment plant and supply network (phase 1) in Ghana to the client Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA).

The contract with a value of around € 9 million was completed in time within two years. The completion of two more phases – one is already being carried out by STRABAG – will achieve a clean water supply for a population of around 200,000 people in the Volta region 140 km east of Accra.

The President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama, had previously visited the site and expressed his full satisfaction regarding the quality, technical solutions as well as the efficient project management which allowed a timely completion. Especially the photovoltaic component added to the drinking water treatment plant has created great awareness of the technical and project management capabilities of STRABAG Water Technologies in Western Africa. The photovoltaic component provides sufficient electricity to keep the water flowing in case of electrical grid shortages.

The Ghana phase 1 project is a good example for the current situation in the water sector worldwide as in recent times it has become increasingly evident that the availability of clean water is a problem in Western Africa. For this reason, the purification and provision of clean and safe drinking water and the treatment of waste waters has been given a high priority by politicians and supranational organizations such as World Bank or IMF. In this regard, Austria has strengthened and increased its export assistance programme in the water sector in order to provide safe drinking water.

STRABAG Water Technologies is currently executing several European financed water projects in countries such as Bosnia, China, Ghana and Sri Lanka with a total value of around € 37 million financed by European tied buyer credit on favourable terms with export credit coverage.
