STRABAG consortium building Ulriken railway tunnel in Norway for more than € 150 million

    • Contract value of 7.8 km tunnel € 156 million
    • Use of largest tunnel boring machine in Norway to date
Vienna, 21 May 2014---The publicly listed construction group STRABAG SE, as part of a consortium, has been awarded the contract by the Norwegian National Rail Administration (Jernbaneverket) to build Section UUT21 of the Ulriken Tunnel in Bergen. The contract has a value of about € 156 million (~ NOK 1.3 billion). STRABAG and Skanska each hold 50 % of the construction consortium.

Construction of the approximately 7.8 km long railway tunnel, which will connect the Bergen and Arna stations in western Norway, is expected to begin in June 2014 and should last around seven years.

“The works will be carried out using a tunnel boring machine with a diameter of 9.3 m. That is the largest TBM ever used in Norway,” says STRABAG SE CEO Thomas Birtel, explaining the uniqueness of this project.

The new section will be constructed alongside the existing tunnel from the year 1964 in order to increase the passenger and freight capacity on the line.
